Buildium utility billing alternative for landlords who bill utilities

By MeterEase · Updated

Buildium is property management software. Its help center describes RUBS as adding a common expense allocation for each utility, recording the bill, then adding charges to each lease ledger in bulk, and sending statements.

Price

Capterra lists Buildium from $62/month (Essential), $192/month (Growth) and $400/month (Premium), usage based. Buildium does not list a separate RUBS price. Checked October 14, 2026; confirm on their site before you buy.

MeterEase is $14/month (Starter, up to 4 units), $34/month (Growth, up to about 20 units) or $69/month (Portfolio, up to 50 units, then $1.50 per unit over 50), with a 7-day Growth trial. A card is required. See MeterEase pricing.

Where Buildium utility billing is the better fit

  • RUBS charges post straight to tenant ledgers next to rent, inside a full accounting and property management system.
  • Tenants can pay online, and Buildium handles leasing, maintenance and owner reporting too.

How MeterEase is different

  • MeterEase is only the bill-back, from $14 a month, for landlords who do not need a full system.
  • It reads the vendor, period and total from the bill PDF, keeps a vacancy rule per property, and emails each tenant their share with the source bill attached.
  • CSV export with paste notes for your rent app if you keep your ledger elsewhere.

MeterEase is a math helper, not legal advice. You choose the split method and own the lease terms. Try thefree RUBS calculator first, or read what RUBS is.

Run this split every month without the spreadsheet

MeterEase reads the master bill PDF, applies your method and vacancy rule, and emails each tenant their share with the source bill attached, after you check the numbers. Plans start at $14/month.

Questions

Does Buildium do RUBS?

Yes. Buildium’s help center describes setting up a common expense allocation per utility and entering bulk charges to split the bill across lease ledgers.

When should I stay on Buildium?

If you already run your books, leases and rent in Buildium, its allocations keep utility charges on the same ledger. MeterEase fits landlords who want the split and tenant emails without a full property management system.
