Move-in/move-out checklist

By MeterEase · Updated

Print this page and walk the unit with your tenant. Note the condition of each item at move-in, both sign, and each keeps a copy. Use the same sheet at move-out. Your browser’s Print button prints just the checklist.

Not legal advice. Some states require their own form or deadlines. See useful links by state.

Questions

Why use a move-in/move-out checklist?

It records the condition of the unit on the day the tenant moves in, signed by both sides. At move-out you compare the same rooms. That makes deposit conversations about facts, not memory.

Does my state require one?

Several states require a written condition record or walk-through, sometimes on a state form. Check your state on our useful links page and read the current law before you rely on this generic version.

Should I take photos too?

Yes. Dated photos or video of each room back up what the checklist says. Note on the form that photos were taken and where they are kept.

Is this legal advice?

No. It is a generic template. Some states and cities set their own form or deadlines. Check local rules.
